The Best Hindi Movies For Kids on Netflix Right Now (updated)

Whether you like it or not, your kids are going to watch movies. Why not use it to have them learn a little too?

Luckily Netflix US has a huge selection of Hindi movies that are appropriate for kids and fun to watch.

If you want to teach your child Hindi – this is an amazing activity you can do on a regular basis.

If your kids are Hindi beginners, watching movies will help them start listening for Hindi sounds and words. On the other hand, if your kids speak some Hindi, this is a great way to keep their language skills sharp.

Subtitles or No Subtitles?

I’ve been teaching Hindi for years and I always say YES to English subtitles.

A purist would disagree, but I think it is most important for the kids to HAVE FUN while they watch these movies. The pressure of struggling to understand the movie without subtitles – can make the movie feel like work.

It’s VERY important for kids to think watching a Hindi movie is a treat. If they feel this way, they will try harder to learn the language. They will subconsciously pick up words they recognize and want to keep watching more.

So here is a list of 6 Hindi movies your kids can watch on Netflix!

1.  Main Hoon Na

Shah Rukh Khan classic! SRK plays Major Ram Prasad Sharma – who goes undercover as a college student to protect the daughter of his commander, General Bakshi.

Initially a misfit, he eventually becomes close to a group of cool college friends. Fun college antics ensue, with school dances, movie theater hangouts, but all with a looming sense of danger (very PG danger). Everything in this movie is lighthearted and fun, even the fighting sequences.

2. Hum Saath Saath Hain

A look into a traditional Rajasthani Indian joint family and their eventful lives. It is colorful, joyful -- and all in all epic. Your child will get to see traditional Indian culture from yesteryear including their food, clothes, norms and events.

There are weddings, fights, travel and lots of catchy songs, including one dedicated to the English alphabet. Squeaky clean for your child, this movie is a classic -- but it is long, so plan on watching it in a few sittings:).

3. 83

An inspiring sports movie based on true events! The movie follows the underdog Indian cricket team in 1983. Led by Kapil Dev (played by Ranveer Singh) the movie shows us how the team defies all odds to become world champions. Watch it for positive messages about teamwork and determination. To top it off -- child can learn a little something about cricket too!

4. Jab We Met

A mix of Bollywood masala and a modern, yet appropriate, love story. This light romantic comedy has a chatty Karina Kapoor meeting a calm, stoic Shahid Kapoor.

The two travel through India on trains, buses and rickshaws to reunite her with her family. The movie is fun, playful, set to amazing music and will show your kids various locations around India.

NOTE: There are some off-color jokes in this movie. To avoid these, you can fast forward time-stamp 28:30- 36:00.

5. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun

Another 90’s classic, this movie broke all box office records with its family centric plot, big songs and depiction of a traditional Indian joint-family.  No villains in this one — except for a somewhat catty mami-ji. Your child will see Indian culture in full form and enjoy a simple story about a family over the years.

6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

This movie centers around a little girl, Anjali, who plays matchmaker between her father and his college best friend also named Anjali (Kajol). In order to match them up, Anjali goes to a hill-station summer camp filled with fun characters including her dadi (grandmother), a sweet little boy, and a zany camp director (played by Johnny Lever).

Intermixed with flashbacks from their college days, this film has light hearted humor, joy, heartbreak and romance. It is everything you look for in a Bollywood film. Of course, the music is phenomenal too!
